Tom Hartley (born 1945 or 1946) is an Irish republican politician and historian. Hartley was born and raised in Belfast’s Falls Road neighbourhood, where he became a republican activist in the late 1960s. For unruly behaviour, he was imprisoned for 10 months at the Crumlin Road Prison in 1970, and he was imprisoned again in 197Hartley was the chairman of the POW Committee during the 1981 Irish hunger strike. Hartley got involved with Sinn Féin in the mid-1980s, serving as General Secretary and Chair in the early 1990s. He was elected to Belfast City Council for the Lower Falls in 1993 and has kept his seat in every election thereafter. In the 1994 European election, Hartley was one of three Sinn Féin candidates in Northern Ireland. Although he received just 3.8 percent of the vote and was not elected, he received more votes than the other candidates in the party. In 2008, Hartley was elected as Belfast’s second Sinn Féin Lord Mayor.
